Interview with photographer #16: Bruno Thethe (Brazil, Portrait/Street/Life photography)

Bruno Thethe

Name: Bruno Thethe dos Santos

Age: 27

Location: Brazil, São Paulo

Style: Portrait and Street/Life Photography

Gear: Canon T6 + 50mm 1.8

Experience: A year and a half shooting

When did you start shooting and how did this love for photography happen? What is your view about photography?

My first contact with a camera was in 2011, in college. I did Graphic Design and we had some photography classes. I liked, but never really had time nor money to buy one.

With my years working with design, my passion for photography started to grow more and more, because we use photos everyday.

But in 2017 some big changes happened in my personal life, and I decided it was time to finally buy the camera and get on with it. And here I am.

Photography is a lot of things. It can be a job or hobby. It can be art or help business. It can be happy or sad. It can true or fake. It’s something everyone can enjoy. It’s really a magical thing.

Apart from photography, tell me about your hobbies and interests?

I am a designer. That’s something I really love. I love to read books and Japanese manga too. I like rock n roll and synthwave. I also like to swim.

Which genre of photography do you like/practice and why?

I am mostly a portrait photographer. I love the models reaction when they see a job done. They get happy and have a better opinion of themselves. It helps with self esteem and other problems they might have. Is just great.

I also love to just take my camera and walk by the street. It help me calm down and relax.

Almost 90% of photographers find it hard to earn money out of photography. Any tips that might help photographers to earn money?

This is really hard. What you want to do is take a LOT of photos. Always. And then share it with the world. If you want money out of it, you must be seen. This is harder than it seems, though.

What mistakes did you make when you started taking pictures?

I guess it was the rush to get likes and shares and stuff. This is something that comes naturally and if you are too worried about it, it will affect your photography in a negative way. So, do your job as best as you can, try to get better always, and these things will come to you.

Which photo are you currently most proud of? Tell us a story about this photo please.

It’s really hard to choose between your kids. But I guess I’ll go with this one.

It marks a great development of my photography both directing and creating. Maybe it’s not my greatest work, but it has a special meaning. It was the first time I looked and thought: Wow, this looks really amazing. I did that?

What do you do to keep motivated, and not lose your passion for photography?

I like to see others photographers work. This make me think things like: “Oh, I want to do something like this” or “Wow, maybe someday I’ll get this good!” Also, rest. Really important to take a time off photography from time to time.

Why are you giving away your photos on Pexels/Unsplash?

Two reasons: One, I can make my work go to places and people I’ve never heard of, and they will use it to help them achieve something. And this will let a little mark in the this people and perhaps in the world, when I die. Second, my work can be seen by thousands of people, and this can help my career in lots of different ways.

Light, decisive moment, content, ambiance, a good gear, according to you which is the most essential element in photography?

The photographer! The best gear, best knowledge and best location will sure help you achieve great things. But the main thing is you. How you see things, how you challenge yourself, how you respond to things…

How fo you promote yourself as photographer?

I mainly use social media and websites like Pexels and Unsplash.

Share your goal in photography?

Make the greatest pictures ever taken!

Is there a photo you dream of taking?

Yes, the Earth. From the Moon. It’s probably gonna be worst than every picture taken by any astronaut or satellite. But it’s about the moment and the registration of it.
